Across the world, educators are finding ways to create welcoming communities with young people. They build programs to support youth in future-building, leverage technology to serve as spaces for connection, create spaces for educators’ continued learning, and partner with refugees to co-construct knowledge about schooling.

In this blog series, we provide insights from researchers and practitioners who are using education to cultivate and sustain communities of belonging for young people and their families. We welcome additional perspectives on these issues. Contributors may send their ideas or written work to reach@gse.harvard.edu.

Pedagogies of Belonging In Practice: A Workshop for Educators On Creating Welcoming Communities

We created and led a virtual workshop for educators to discuss Pedagogies of Belonging, a new REACH book containing microportraits of educators whose practices seek to build welcoming communities. The workshop was intended for Boston-based educators to discuss pedagogies the book highlighted and to determine if and how to engage with these pedagogies in their respective contexts.

Empowering Educators: Transforming Learning For Refugee and Host Community Learners in Poland

n 2022, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the sudden arrival of over 182,000 Ukrainian children brought challenges that Polish teachers and schools were not prepared for. We share insights from our work on how teachers can be supported in their work with refugees.

In a recent study, we explore the views of more than 3,000 Colombian secondary students across 45 public schools located in Bogotá. We ask, what do young people attending school in Colombia understand about the Venezuelan crisis driving migration, and how do they feel about how their country has responded? We find that Colombian students understand Venezuelan migration in divergent ways.
