University of Oxford Public Seminar on Navigational Capacities for 'Unknowable Futures'

15 March 2021

Refugee REACH founder and director Sarah Dryden-Peterson of HGSE presented her team’s research findings during a live public seminar on February 22nd. The title of her presentation was “Navigational capacities for unknowable futures: What refugee students wish their teachers knew.”

Team members include REACH co-founder Vidur Chopra of Teachers College; Carmen Geha of the American University of Beirut; and Joumana Talhouk at the University of Oxford.

Drawing on in-depth interviews with ninth grade Syrian refugee children in public and private schools in Lebanon, their work describes the ways in which young children desire their education to develop the navigational capacities for ‘unknowable futures’. The findings from this study are immediately relevant to education actors, particularly teachers, as they make decisions in the present about education that can best prepare their students for the future.
