The Journey to Becoming Someone
Written by Maria Lee, illustrated by Anna Jeon
Audience: Ages 5-9
The Journey to Becoming Someone is based on the story of Nyunt, a Burmese woman who sought refuge in Thailand together with her family before settling in the United States. Through education, she achieved her dream of becoming a nurse to help others in need.
The author hopes that through this storybook, young audiences will become motivated to learn more about experiences of refugees and eventually become leaders themselves who advocate for the rights of refugees. This resource is geared toward elementary students who have little prior understanding or exposure to refugees’ rights, advocacy, and experiences.
