Abdul
Written and illustrated by Emily Maguire
Audience: Ages 10-14
This illustrated book is a personal account of Abdul, an Afghani child whose schooling was interrupted by armed conflict. Yet he never gave up in his pursuit of education. Readers learn of his family’s experience living in Kabul and being displaced by war, and seeking refuge in neighboring Pakistan before eventually settling in the United States.
“Abdul” incorporates history, politics, and religion and grapples with issues of violence, identity, and displacement. This resource is intended for middle school and late elementary school students and can be used as a stand-alone reading for any unit focusing on the impacts of war on children and education.
