Shams

By Dima Masri

Audience: Ages 10-14, 15-18

Shams is a collection of poems inspired by an interview with Shams, a Palestinian girl born in Jerusalem who grew up in the West Bank. Central to Shams’ story is the power of music in shaping her educational trajectory and providing unique opportunities compared to that of her peers.

Whatever I do, I’ll make sure it’s positive.
My education is my resistance.

The poems are divided into three parts, representing the three parts of an orchestra concert: the Overture (birth), Concerto (passions and educational experiences), Symphony (divergent educational realities).

The work can be enjoyed by a wide range of audiences but may be most appreciated by young adults. Educators may find this resource useful for specific units focusing on the Middle East and experiences of refugeehood.
