James’ Story
By Maria Selde
Audience: Ages 10-14
Inspired by The Moth, this podcast presents the story of James, a man born and raised in Sierra Leone during the country’s civil war.
James shares his experiences from age 18 and uncovers how conflict in Sierra Leone shaped his educational journey and, ultimately, redefined his future. It proceeds chronologically through James’ lived experiences starting pre-civil war (1991) through 2016. The podcast touches upon issues concerning war and violent conflict, internal displacement, and power and privilege in the pursuit of education.
Listeners are encouraged to think about the ideas James present in the context of global responsibility to ensuring refugees’ rights’ and dignity.
